Heart of Eden AmeriCorps Program

The Heart of Eden AmeriCorps Program provides case management services to youth and young adults in the Eden Area to strengthen the spectrum of positive opportunities, focusing on job training and employment assistance, and including neighborhood improvement projects, and building a volunteerism program that allows youth and young adults to work side by side to rebuild their neighborhoods.  Volunteers of this prestigious program play a variety of roles. Employment Readiness and Academic Facilitator Members at our Employment Training Academies support youth and young adults step-by-step in developing their education and careers and Financial Literacy Facilitators help young people and their families to develop healthy money management practices.

AmeriCorps Members are charged with the goal of provide the following employment services to area youth:
  • Assist participants with breaking down and addressing barriers to employment;
  • Develop an individual service plan for short / long term education and/or employment goals;
  • Connect participants with potential employers;
  • Mentor participants in positive communication skills & workplace behaviors;
  • Address work or family issues that may inhibit success;
  • Facilitate group discussions based on career interests;
  • Provide resume and cover letter assistance;
  • Work with local businesses to create job opportunities;
  • Conduct job site visits -- connecting with youth employers to assess satisfaction of job performance and intervene when necessary; and
  • Refer clients to appropriate workshops, education resources, & other technical assistance, as needed.

As part of the Youth Services Division commitment to professional development and continued education, AmeriCorps members receive year-round specialized training from ACAP staff and seasoned community members with expertise in a variety of fields. Supporters have included: Natalie Thorenson of Invision Consulting, Bob Estrada of Hayward Youth and Family Services Bureau, Anna Perez of Stars, Inc., Maria Esteves, Christine Blackmon and Poder Soluations. A special shout out goes to Pastor Bob Parma and Grace Baptist Church at 16105 Mateo Street in San Leandro for hosting this year's member orientation sessions.
